Again, what does originality have to do with this? Did it copy some other fight scene? No. Just because it doesn't make up moves doesn't make it unoriginal. The coreography was unique and well crafted. That is what really matters. Matrix action scenes are awesome, and the whole slow-mo thing was cool, but that's not the only thing that makes the action scenes in the Matrix awesome. It's the coreography, the layout and flow of the fight. That's what makes it impressive. Most of the hand to hand combat uses established moves from established martial arts. Does that make them bad? Plus, within the realm of realism, there's only so much the human body can do. Trying to pursue originality (in the Matrix sense of the word) in a realistic fight scene is oxymoronic.
Edit: While we're talking about characters we love because of awesome fight scenes, Mugen from Samurai Champloo is pretty cool.

Yes, Mugan is great.
Anyway, first, in reviews, the term resonance(actually a term used to refer to audible noise) is referred to as a metaphor. Have you ever heard anyone use the term "deep blacks" when describing black levels? Well, can blacks actually be "deep?" What is the definition of deep?
It is similar to that. Resonance refers to many things, but the most common accepted usage is the carrying of sound beyond the level that the sound should be carried based on its size or level.
When I say something has resonance, I mean that its meaning is carried and amplified beyond what it would first appear for the audience. For instance, when I say that fight scenes resonated with the audience, I mean the scenes
-
Evoke or suggest images, memories, and emotions
-
the scenes resonate with so many different meanings
-
Defnintion provided by Google English dictionary.
Scenes with resonance are often very influental adding another element to the metaphorical theme of "carrying sound."
The scenes in the boring forgettable movie we're talking about(I forget the name) are not resonant. They are the opposite of resonant. They are "good for an anime" but they have been done before and done better. They aren't extremely innovative, shocking, or violent. They are "traditional."
A lot of people thing a movie is good because a character is "badass" or "the fight scenes are good" but the truth is, in that movie, the movie is kind of boring, it certainly is no Matrix. If we think a movie is good just because it's an anime, we are being biased. I think that this movie was very average, and the fight scenes were traditional, but good. The story and characters didn't matter, I cared nothing for any of the characters and it was a huge wasted opportunity imho.
As for originality, I think that is debatable, but imo, I've seen very similar, but much better fight scenes years earlier in Samurai X, and even Ninja Scroll(which is great for a number of reasons imho, and FAR superior movie to most modern live action films).
We just have different opinions bro, it's no big deal, I'm not trying to be controversial, I actually just don't like the movie. I wish I did. Anyway, to each his own.
