IMO, Sword of the Stranger is vastly overrated. The story kinda sucked, the action scenes were good, but they had no resonnance or originality. I give the movie a 2/4 stars, and I think it is FAAAAR inferior to Ninja Scroll or Spirited Away. :P That is why I can't recommend any of the barely present and nameless characters in the movie(I hate it).

Go watch the Samurai X OVA for the same boring ass characters and dialogue but with VASTLY better action scenes.

The story was pretty standard fare for an action movie, but that's not a bad thing.  It was told pretty well.  There was a pretty good amount of characterization.  Nothing mind blowing, but the story never really is the point of a movie like this.  What the fudge does "an action scene having resonance" mean?  That's got to be the most nonsensical thing I've ever heard.  Unless it copied other action scenes, I don't understand how it couldn't be original, either.  The only thing I can think of is that the fighters used established fighting styles, which I don't have an issue with.  The coreography was flawless; as I said, the best animated fight scenes I've ever seen (Ehh, I dunno, some of the FMA movie fight scenes are pretty incredible as well).

An action scene has resonance when it is good and original enough to influence other action scenes. When it is memorable and deep. It's kind of hard to explain, but scenes in any film can have resonance. That is my opinion and that is my meaning.

As far as the action scenes being original, the Matrix had original action scenes with resonance(spelling?), imo.
