When it freezes at start-up, is there a disc in the Wii, i.e. is the MH game still in the Wii?
If so, its probably all related to a dirty Wii. :)
If you notice when you turn on your Wii it reads the disc loaded so it knows what's there. If it were too dirty to accomplish this it could freeze just as it would during a game that is being actively played.
I'd try the cleaning kit as its easy and inexpensive.
