Is there a reason why they can't use metal bats? I'm not really into baseball so I'm not what the the difference in bats make.

They don't use aluminum bats for the reason that noname 2200 already said.

What they need to do is stop using maple bats though.  The wood breaks much easier.  Also, the fact that hitters are allowed to shave the handle of the bat down to the point where they are virtually nonexistant does not help the matter.

I'm just glad that the young man is going to live.  He had a breathing tube put in him because he had his lung punctured.  They said that the wooden stake was a couple of inches from getting his heart.  Scary, but true.

One last thing.  Being a Cubs fan, I'd have to say that this incident is symbolic of the Cubs in general.  The Cubs have a horrible year.  Rookie Tyler Colvin has a very impressive season and then is impaled by a bat.  That's about how things go for the Cubs.
