But then when I got mid way through the game I realized the story was extremely cliched, I didn't like a single character except maybe Morrigan and the battle system was just boring. And it wasn't really an open world game either like Oblivion, so its hard to excuse a boring battle system and a meh story (while in Oblivion I could somewhat excuse the story due to the open world nature of the game). The story seemed like a mish mash of 10 cheap fantasy novels, Alistair should be hanged and the gameplay was boring. See I haven't even said anything about the graphics yet, there's no need to because they weren't as bad as everyone said and I am fine with playing DS RPG's so didn't care that much. On the other in ME1/ME2, the story was so EPIC and I cared about those Characters, I mean you have characters like Mordin Solus in the ME series, what do you have in Dragon Age? That big troll thing who isn't really fun to talk to anyway? When I play a Bioware RPG I expect not only one of the best WRPG's of the gen but one of the best RPG's of the generation, thats what I got with KOTOR back in the day, thats what I got with ME1 and ME2. But Dragon Age was shockingly mediocre compared to the studio's past efforts, hence disappointing. Not a bad game, just not worthy of Bioware though. Oblivion remains my WRPG of the gen, and with Elder Scrolls V possibly coming out next year Bioware better improve this by a lot! |
Did you ever play any Bioware games before KoToR?
Dragon Age is very much an old school RPG and caters greatly to the tastes of PC RPG players from the late 90s. It's very much like Baldurs Gate rather than Bioware's modern games, which isn't that suprising since it was > 5 yrs in the making.
As for the characters, I thought they were quite entertaining, just as much as Mass Effects tbh. The troll character (I assume you mean Sten) is meant to represent a very different culture and he's there to challenge the player in understanding him and getting his back story. And what about Zevran? That little gay elf killer was both disturbing and hilarious!
I agree the story was cliched though I think that was partly on purpose as it was the first fantasy world they'd created (before Mass Effect's). There is still a lot to cover for future games as they spent nearly 2 yrs of development solely on Dragon Age world and lore.
