I'm guessing it was the schedule, with so many other popular casual or franchise sequels, Nintendo reverted back to the NES/SNES of having to leave good games over in Japan, because they couldn't see them being popular enough to warrent trying over here.
Doesn't explain why we got Fossil Fighter game from a few years back later but yeah...
