For the record SNES>Gen there are many things factoring in to these successes 

GB>GG - Simply put the Gamegear wasn't portable

DS>PSP - Battery life was also a point here, so was library, unique controls, expanding audience, excessive load times, etc

PS1>N64 (btw you meant Saturn not Dreamcast, Dreamcast was against PS2) - Library, Sony gave third parties exactly what they wanted, and they were expanding the audience to the "popular" kids, the college folks, the jocks, just demographics not hit before.
