Imagine some of your friends are doing some huge event far away from where you are, and they tell you about it, and you want to play with them. Well, with the fast travel system you just go there (if you've been there before, otherwise the waypoint wouldn't be unlocked), instead of using some mount to go a little faster than normal or fly there, but still take ages.

Well, it worked in Oblivion so why not!
