LG stands for Lucky Goldstar. In the West we have the slogan Life's Goood in the LG ads hence it's asociation. This was of course a deliberate marketing strategy by LG.

Does no one remember 'Goldstar' electronic goods from years gone by?

Thing with Sony is though they are top quality you do pay for the name as well.

They top our local reliability survey, Samsung is actually at the bottom for TV reliability.
