As of this weeks numbers the Xbox 360's numbers are back to the 5.5 Million console lead over the PS3 that it has pretty much maintained over the life (of both consoles)..

It was NEVER close to 8 million ahead.. its bounced mostly between 5 and 6 million ahead

Last year... week before PS3 Slim.

360: 31,201,088
PS3: 22,657,164

GAP:  8,543,924

It was over 8 million ahead.

I checked and Im surprised it was ahead in fact 8 million world wide before PS3 slim..  hard to see it being that far ahead again, but this generation its pretty safe to say 360 will end up in 2nd place
