It actually just requires calibration when starting up a game from what I know. I also am not 100% positive what happens if you try to block the eyes view, but Brian Crecente had trouble getting it to not register. I also know that you can navigate the XMB using the Move while having the Eye not even connected to the PS3. Check the link.
