They 'explained' the lack of those military tactics with the 'fact' that Pandora's atmosfeer screws up advanced equipement.

The (private) military in the movie looks pretty lame for the future age.  They don't even have killersatellites around the planet.  Geez, we could even build them today. 

james cameron is just making lame excuses they should have been able to take that thing out instantly
