If you like GTA then you really should have Godfather and/or Scarface and/or Bully on Wii.   All are great sandbox games and the motion controls and IR aiming actually adds a lot to this genre.   Godfather is my favorite but they are all excellent and like give tons of game play time.

Know what you mean though.  Too many half-ass attempts on Wii,  Red Steel 2 and FFCC:CB were huge disappointments for me.   Conduit too but I had mild expectations for that.  Need for Speed Nitro was okay but not great.   However, there's definitely some gems, Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, Prince of Persia:FS is very solid (surprising from Ubisoft) and content rich, NMH2 improves on the first and removes the open world element altogether.   Never played it but F1 is supposed to be an excellent racer, and Excitebots is great if your into trick racing.

No great JRPGs on Wii though, not until next year at least.  Even I have a 360 for my RPG fix and I love my Wii.  Play it over HD consoles any day, except for WRPGs which Wii has none.   But Fire Emblem is a great SRPG and Sakura Wars is a unique and surprisingly amusing Romance/SRPG both for Wii.

I wouldn't (and aren't I'm buying it) be put off my M:OM play time.   It's average for that type of game and it's a lot longer than a lot of action HD titles which can be as short as 6-8 hours (single player).   Normally if I feel the value isn't there I wait for a price drop, but that won't happen with Metroid, so might as well buy it now.
