At this point, Japan matters more as a center for development imo.  The industry itself is still big, but it's shrinking due to Japan's birthrate crisis.  And for consoles it's pretty much purely secondary, handhelds have taken over in every sense. That said, there's pretty much no way PS3 will ever exceed Wii's lifetime sales in the region.

I do think PS3 (and 360) will weather 3DS better than Wii does though.  Better luck with Wii 2 Nintendo...

You mean for the year I would assume? Yeah, I'd say it has a shot at it. Japan is the region where Move is the biggest wildcard to potentially steal Wii's sales and I'd say it also depends on how many blue GT5 bundles Sony makes. They'll probably make a statement about that in the near future since they said how many GT5:P and Lightning bundles were produced (200k each).
