At this point, Japan matters more as a center for development imo. The industry itself is still big, but it's shrinking due to Japan's birthrate crisis. And for consoles it's pretty much purely secondary, handhelds have taken over in every sense. That said, there's pretty much no way PS3 will ever exceed Wii's lifetime sales in the region.
I do think PS3 (and 360) will weather 3DS better than Wii does though. Better luck with Wii 2 Nintendo...

That comment makes no sense. Why make PS3 games in Japan when you can make PSP games instead. It has a larger fanbase.
