My (admittedly-limited) experience with the genre came up with this list:
1. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
2. Clock Tower (yes, a f***ing SNES game--try it, I dare you).
3. Resident Evil
4. Resident Evil Zero
5. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
