I'm sure the PSP is not designed to self-destruct after repeated usage, but based on my personal experience, I would not like to see a PSP dropped from a distance four-to-five feet high onto the pavement. You can pretty much kiss the PSP goodbye if that has ever happened to you.
By contrast, I've dropped the DS Lite three times under similar circumstances - once with the screen open - and the most that's happened to it is the typical scratch on the corner.
And I echo your sentiments about the DS's game library. Apart from Mario Kart DS, there is not one racing game that I would consider anything but a complete waste of time playing.
