hello, they already are! right now it's not going to change how much the opposition is going to challenge any new product, the same could be said about anyone of those product's against any of the other devices also. as for not sure how successful it's going or not going to be that's going to have to wait until they release the device to the market. the fact that Sony has sold over 50 million psp's for it's first Handheld game system is nothing to sneeze at, and the PSP is still selling. |
yes they already are competing but to directly compete with both is a bad idea. I mean sure the PSP is competing with all portable entertainment now, but it's only really competing directly with the DS. Lots of people are willing to carry around 2 portable devices (few are willing to have more than 2 and most people will only have one) and one of those is probably going to be a phone, so the PSPhone will be directly competing with the iphone for that slot were as the the PSP/DS could occupy a second slot very few people are willing to carry around two phones. Now as phones are more and more capable as game players fewer and fewer people are willing to carry additional dedicated devices for that purpose, the 3DS tries to get around this with a unique hook which is the 3D (and Nintendo games etc) to make people to carry it in adition to a phone. The PSPhone on the other hand will be an either/or proposition to anyone with another phone as it is a phone it's self.
The PSPhone's main selling point is the fact that it will be able to play PSP games and expect it will be advertised as the gamers phone, but if you look at current phone games which are simple and cheap and future phone games like Rage, deep with high production values you will see that the PSPhone will be a hard sell especially with current pricing models (I expect prices of PSP PSN games especially minis to be dropped in price) but your average iphone game is what $0.99? pretty hard to compete. If you see the phone part as something to sell more games etc I think you will find you are wrong, IMO this is an attempt to keep sony Ericsson phones relevant more than anything else and I think it will fail. Iphone games are getting to good, So IMO trying to beat apple at their own game when your only advantage is buttons and game quality is a bad move in a market dominated by casual and non gamers who's main concern is price and having a fun distraction for 5 mins while on the bus, something the PSP still struggles to provide with it's console light games.
Edit finished my thought
sorry if this is incoherent I had to right it quickly and don't have time to proof read...
