The Metroid series has never had a reboot. Even Metroid Prime, which jumped into 3D, was more of a 'reimagining' of the Metroid style than a reboot. As evidence of Metroid Creator Sakamoto working on more traditional 2D games while Metroid Prime was out. And now making a game that looks to do the same thing in a 3D relm. And all of them are still connected by story.
If anything, Metroid Other M is an 'update' to 3D much like Ocarina of Time was for Zelda. And as much as people loved Metroid Prime (as did I), it really didn't capture the 'feel' of playing a Metroid game. That is, dashing through corridors and shooting enemies at a moments notice. It was exactly was it was, a first person adventure that focused more on exploration than puzzles or combat.
Everything I've seen from this game looks to be what Metroid Prime was trying to do but couldn't.
