I think that's a pretty good point about who may be buying the new 360s.

Its a complicated issue.

You have:

  • Xbox 360 owners buying PS3s, the hardcore users especially who want to access the recent glut of PS3 exclusives.
  • Xbox 360 owners buying 2nd consoles or replacing their original.
  • Xbox 360s in the used market/being given to friends and this takes time before they become active again.
  • Xbox 360 owners losing interest, the system is afterall one year older and the average time of ownership is longer due to its higher sales in the first few years and the fact that the PS3 surge is still very recent.
  • Piracy, probably increasing as an effect.
  • Used software and software borrowed from friends without any significant new releases to tempt any new owners.
  • Tracking issues for legacy software given the fact that it becomes difficult to track software outside of the top 50.
  • Increasing sales for digitally distributed games. The 1600 point card is the most popular accessoryand assuming that most upgraders are20GB  owners a much greater ability to access the 100 titles on games on demand and Arcade titles.
  • A number of Xbox 360s sold for media extenders and/or use for netflix and other strictly media functionality.

So whilst there are people who are replacing their consoles, the net effect in the market isn't exactly quantifiable based strictly off our retail software sell through numbers just a few weeks after the release of the revision console.

Tease.
