It's usually allergy to latex, though there's always the possibility it's due to some lubricant/spermicide or whatnot. Try polyurethane ones, and there are probably other materials as well.
I don't think a doctor can do much aside from find out whether it's a latex allergy in the first place... and afaik, if you have that, you have it and that's that.

As to the OP question... yes. Only in my current relationship, about an year and a half into it.
