Xbox Live didn't become successful because its a pay service. It became successful because MS it has 360 fans by the balls. We want online play and $50 a year is reasonable considering the quality of the service (I pay considerably less than $50 by the way).

PSN being free is only hurting Sony from making more profits. Why else is Sony trying to create services to charge people? MS already proved people will pay for online play in droves. And if they charge, where are Sony fans going? Their biggest competition is a pay service too.

They can certainly make more profit from charging, but who's to say that Sony isn't making a profit already. XBL vs. PSN isn't a competition at all. XBL is at like 35M? PSN is 50M unique active accounts because people have PS3s and PSPs, buying goods over and over.

Only reason they are charging now is because, like you said, they realized that they can get away with it...but they wouldn't stress so much that YOU DON'T HAVE TO SUBSCRIBE if they were going to make a subscription mandatory for all those features. They will NOT take away PSNs biggest selling point. People accept PSN with open arms because its free. Take that away, and numbers will drop. Take multiplayer away from Live, and numbers will drop. Take uber user friendliness away from Apple products, and numbers will drop.

Sony is a business, and yes they want profit, but they are not dumb enough to taking away the driving force that made PSN what it is today
