Every Metroid since Return of Samus has been linear. Just that most have done a better job of hiding it (Prime, Super, and II), and some not (Fusion, Prime 2, and Prime 3)
Exploration in Metroid has only ever been about finding shortcuts and power-ups, which is the case even for the most linear Metroid (Prime Hunters). |
There's a difference between generally linear and only allowing the occasional sidepath. The sidescrolling games have been getting more and more towards the latter. Super hit the sweet spot, but Fusion and Zero Mission, while not bad, did get into this at points.
And I still say this story has no business in the game, period.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
