Not according to VGC, where the last PSP itteration ( Unite) is ahead of MHTri, and even Capcom stated that Tri had a slow start... every MH game had a slow start in the West, and its still not clear if Tri will pass the million mark...
On the other hand a PS3 version could have done FFXIII numbers in Japan alone if it managed to get some legs, and maybe even more the Tri did in the West, seeing how similary difficult games like Demons Soul managed to pull off impressive numbers... it was a failure from Capcoms part to ditch a PS platform in favor of a Nintendo one, when it comes to a main MH entry. At least the PSP version will rape the Wii version when its launched
OT: JP was waaaaay of this week, and I was shocked when I saw PD2s numbers... now they finally make sense |
According to Capcom, they shipped 400k of MHFU to the west it's first quarter and 690k of MH3 it's first quarter. Their first NPDs, MHFU sold 60k and MH3 sold 120k. Capcom expected 900k out of MHFU in the west btw, though we never got a solid figure for they expected out of MH3. And actually, according to Capcom, they've only shipped 550k copies of MHFU to the west as of last March (200k NA, 250k EU)... looks like it's pretty hugely overtracked on VGC.
Tri wouldn't have done any better on PS3 honestly, in Japan or the west. Demon's Souls is an anomaly, and benefitted hugely from it's release timing, there's basically nothing else like it that's sold as well on PS3 since. Lost Planet 2 likely paints a better picture of what MH3 could've expected had it been a HD game in the west... plus it wouldn't have gotten all that Nintendo funded advertising.
