| N-Syte said: @Final-Fan "As it turns out, not only have Republicans (starting with Reagan) increased the debt more (way more) than [edit: Democrats] -- they've increased spending more too! LAWL." Firstly, a little redundant. Of course the debt went up while spending increased. There is something of a cause and effect there. |
Not at all. (Except for my little mistake there -- whoops!) The debt could have gone up merely because of Republican tax cuts with no increase in spending. But they simultaneously increased spending -- very irresponsible.
| Secondly, try putting a similar chart together but rather then breaking it down by party in the White House, try breaking it down by party in control of Congress. You see, there's this itty bitty role Congress plays when it comes to passing spending bills. Or would that not help your point? |
Well, it's true that Reagan had to fight a Democratic House (with the help of a Republican Senate) -- but Bush had a Republican rubber stamp in both houses and he increased spending dramatically.
Year (Senate, House)
77-79 (D, D)
79-81 (D, D)
81-83 (R, D)
83-85 (R, D)
85-87 (R, D)
87-89 (D, D)
89-91 (D, D)
91-93 (D, D)
93-95 (D, D)
95-97 (R, R)
97-99 (R, R)
99-01 (R, R)
01-03 (tie*, R)
03-05 (R, R)
05-07 (R, R)
07-09 (tie**, D)
*until formerly Republican Jeffords went Independent
**but the Independents like the Democrats better
As you can see, there is still a strong correlation.
P.S. Thanks for all the sarcasm. I've noticed it before. Does it make you feel big, or is it just to help you avoid doing work like putting the table together by your own damn self?

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.
