So far, my 3D experience has been based on movies only, and I've had to imagine what gaming with it might be like. Those fantasies became pretty sweet, and I've finally had the chance to test 3D in gaming out for myself.

I went to a Sony store and got to play Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, WipEout HD and Super Stardust HD in 3D on their sweet in-store setup.

  • WipEout HD:
Not all that impressive, the 3D didn't seem to add much, and I ended up being more focused on the lack of crispness in the controls that comes with the "downgrade" in framerate. "Meh" in other words.
  • Motorstorm: Pacific Rift:
It was okay, with a decent feeling of depth, but nothing that really wow'ed me. I didn't feel it made a real difference to just playing the game normally. I didn't really notice the downgraded visuals though, although I spend a lot of my Motorstorm: PR time in splitscreen anyway, which might explain it. Not bad, just decent.
  • Super Stardust HD:
Awesome. This was by far the best 3D demo I got to see, the 3D really added to the experience. I don't know if it added to the gameplay (if it did, it was very subtle), but the game sucked me in like never before. Playing the game this way was just a much more natural thing to do, and I really hope we will see more titles like it in the console space. I know I'll be going back to see more of this game!
All in all, a good experience. I never expected games retrofitted with 3D would make for great showcases, but SSHD actually did very well. I still expected more from the two others than I got, but you can't win them all I guess.
