Thats where I think the physical medium comes in. Watch hundreds of movies via a streaming subscriptions. Buy the physical movie if its super awesome. There are still a majority of people who cannot and will not for quite a while be able to stream 1080p.

Blu-ray fills the gap of people wanting to _own_ a physical copy of an awesome movie and wanting to watch it in 1080p if their bandwidth services aren't good enough.

I think this is true of countries with poor infrastructures. However in the UK so long as you are not totally rural in locale then 20Mb Broadband is available for about 20 bucks a month.

I dont know how good the Broadband is in the States but I would assume its comparable to Europe.

Well its mainly because there has never been any legislation to push our infrastructure to the next level.  There is some now,  but it will take 5-10 years before that is realized.  

I have alwyays found it odd that the US is this far behind, but its one of the main reasons why I keep saying DD movies will not succeed. 


Well if what you say is true then DD movies wont succeed in the States anytime soon.

Those prices are incredible. For what you pay for 5Mb I can get a 40Mb link with 10Mb upload and no contention.

I'm not sold on DD even in Europe, but streaming is starting to really take off over here.

Even for those on poor bandwidth SKY (Sat Tv Provider) have found a solution. They just record encrypted movies on your PVR at night when your asleep and not using the box. Can record two channels and the movies streams are just saved to disk.

Almost magically movies on demand everyday with no wait time.

Blu Ray in the UK is having the life choked out of it in a three way fight with some nasty characters.

1. "Johnny VOD" (Video on Demand) Small and agile quick to impress people with 2Mb internet links or better. 600 movies and thousands of Tv shows all available at the touch of the remote.

2. "Danny Whats his name" (Lack of education and advertising) The common man still doesnt know what Blu Ray is and aside from a few specialist retailers its getting pretty poor exposure. For instance my local superstore 1 BluRay display (not properly marked) versus 10 DVD racks.

Advertising in the UK is a joke. I havent seen a BluRay specific ad in months. The Blu Ray consortium really need to carry the can on this one.

3. The Big Brute "Damien Recession". Biting as well as punching, kicking and pulling hair. The real bad boy.

The recession still looms large over Europe and my government has just held an Emergency budget. Sales Tax up. Pay freezes all across the country and of course Cuts Cuts Cuts. You dont want to be pedalling a premium product in that climate.
