While the 3DS at the moment doesn't have any games that weren't possible without 3D before, it has plenty of games that gamers want to experience in 3D. Also, it's not like Nintendo absolutely has to have new types of games ready for launch, because at that time no competitor will have shown up. The 3DS is in a comparable situation to the PS2, meaning that even if it doesn't do anything that is very innovative, it will take the victory home.

Putting peoples enthusiasm aside, I would be much happier with say a $20-50 reduction in price tag.

Stepping back into the 3D discussion, taking bets on how many 3rd party games will actually use 3D. If nintendo _requires_ all games use the 3D feature will that mean low number of games? Are studios gonna even be equipped for this? Thats a losing situation if SONY steps up it games and releases 10 games a month on a PSP2 while nintendo is stuck with 2-3 games a month.

the perk is that you can turn it completely off dood, options is a wonderful thing when implemented right that anybody can use the technology.

That doesn't really negate that fact that A) I still had to pay for a feature I wont use. B) developers have to spend money and time developing a feature I wont use. C) It all could amount to less number of games being released.
