Obviously, digital video is not a mass market like digital audio yet, so people should not bash the Apple TV for low sales. I think it's a neat device for zero-setup media streaming. It works as advertised: If it's on iTunes, it's on your TV.

Like Ben, we mostly watch our TV and movies on the computer screen and don't really need the content on the living room TV, but I will get the Apple TV for my mum this Christmas. She has a few hundred songs from the iTunes store, and I will also get her an EyeTV so she can record TV shows and send them to the Apple TV (again, zero-setup). I'm sure she will love it. Apple products are not about features, they're about usability.
