No Nintendo's mistake in the 90's wasn't due to letting the compeition beat them with improved tech, it was twofold, first there was the fact that they lost library support, largest library is very important, and PS1 had a much larger library than the N64, this was due to the liscensing issues of the NES and SNES, in addition there was a lack of product differentation, the SNEs/N64 and GCN all were too much like the competition when they launched. Nintendo has always done best when their system has different strengths than their competition at launch
