| 7.0 | Presentation Great localization, though a little heavy on the alliteration. It's a shame that the heroes of your party don't develop emotionally as the story unfolds. |
| 8.0 | Graphics Character models are cute and items change their physical appearance (which is quite remarkable), but environments are mostly unoriginal. |
| 7.0 | Sound No voice acting. Music is adequate, though there's a lot of repetition to be found. Towns with completely different styles will have the same "town theme," which can be annoying. |
| 7.5 | Gameplay Somewhat bland battle system. Fortunately the slick multiplayer interface makes Dragon Quest IX a rewarding RPG. |
| 8.5 | Lasting Appeal Alchemy and side quests will keep you playing for a long, long time. |
