You could ask the same think about the Gameboy Name ... Changing a name can actually be a very good thing because it creates a new blank slate in people's minds when they think of your product; naming your system the Playstation 3 (PS3) means that everyone has preconceptions (good and bad) about what your product is and who it is for long before they ever see it. |
True but I suspect part of the name change for the DS was to help consumers avoid confusion with the Gameboy Advance and especially so that Nintendo could distance the product from the Gameboy lineup if it turned out to be a failure since it was a significant departure from the Gameboy design. The Wii on the other hand is the successor to a console that was losing marketshare so it was obvious they wouldn't call it something like the Super Gamecube for example. Also the Wii name is being heavily promoted to non-gamers so if Nintendo were to use another name with it's next console it would literally be starting back at square one with those consumers who likely don't follow videogame news. Unless they plan on making a significant departure with their next console (which is doubtful) it really wouldn't make sense not to capitalize on the Wii name's success. |
It won't be Wii, but it will be something that signals their intent to make gaming for everyone, it may well be another variant of a pronoun |
