They did with the PS1. That's part of the reason, along with Nintendo and Sega's mistakes, that the PS1 took off. It was easier to develop for that either the N64 or Saturn. After they got on top, Sony became arrogant and didn't care how difficult their platform was for developers to handle. The PS2 and PS3 were the most difficult platforms to develop for, this philosophy was diametrically opposed to what got them on top with the PS1.

You have your facts mistaken. MS did copy Sony, they copied PS1 era Sony.  MS's strategy of taking a loss on hardware, having an easy to develop platform, and using money hats to buy exclusivity or support in general was the exact same strategy Sony pioneered.
