When I researched Sony in highschool for a report on the worlds biggest monopolies I think I found like 100 subsidiary companies. Heck Sony had its hands in food manufacturing, chemical plants, power plants, toilet paper companies, toilet companies. Not to mention the dozen entertainment companies like 5 or 6 record companies like 5 movie publishers with a dozen studios under them. If you incuded every subsidiary it becomes what I'd claim is the biggest monopoly on earth.Infact when I was researching it Sony was working on a guidance chip for US missile systems. So they even make weapons. Sony is by far the biggest monopoly I have ever heard of. Not even Microsoft or Disney hold a candle to Sony. So if Sony couldn't kill Nintendo, who on earth could? |
Joe, Sony is very much a broad spectrum company but most certainly they are not a monopoly. Perhaps you have your terminology confused. A monopoly is a company that operates in a given field without compeition. They are also illegal (with few exceptions such as local electric power comapnies).
Sony may have a hand in dozens upon dozens of markets, products and services but they hold no monopoly over any of them. You even mentioned one of the closest things to a monopoly we have in the US with Microsoft. They own just over 90% of the operating system market. Sony doesn't come close to owning 90% of any market.
