As good a company as Sony is, I can't see them posing any threat to Nintendo in the foreseeable future. Sony have chosen their path, and unfortunately this means that they are doomed to spending the rest of their lives creating consoles as expensive and powerful machines. Their fans would be in dismay if they didn't make their console considerably more powerful each generation, and this is going to turn out very expensive for Sony eventually.
