Back in the NES days games radiated awesome or fail. You could touch the packaging and carry it around the store with you looking at it... and you knew just by doing that whether or not the game would be great. Reviews weren't necessary... and still aren't.
People get too hung up on scores and forget about the simple fun gaming brings. Remember, that's why people play games... to have fun.
