It would be great if this would lead to safe and legitimate economic opportunities for Afghanistan, which is probably the whole reason why American geologists are surveying minerals in the region.
And I know it's hard to remember after a decade of Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, renditions, no WMDs, etc., but the US actually had pretty damn good reasons to invade Afghanistan. Unlike Iraq, that war had UN and NATO backing. We can only imagine what the situation in Afghanistan might be today if the Iraq misadventure hadn't happened.
