I think Sony is just playing smart and are waiting to see what Nintendo will do with 3DS. They don't want to bring out a system just to have it miss features that Nintendo's system does have. They made that mistake with the first PSP, with DS having touchscreen. Then the same thing happened with PS3 and Wii having motion controls, with Sony missing out again.

All Sony will do now is look at what Nintendo does and then improve on that. That way can launch a similiar system as to 3DS only more powerfull and with extra features, and get an advantage that way.

Does anyone know what kind of storage media 3DS will use?

This would not work at all. The 3DS has hit the "powerful enough" barrier, so unless Sony introduces something completely new, their next handheld cannot compete at all.

It almost seems like you think this is about competing hardware, but it's not. The systems sell on games, and if Nintendo has high profile 3rd party games right off the bat, on top of a large library / install base before Sony's release, they're screwed. This is actually how Sony got their strong start against Nintendo in the first place (with PS1), but in this case it's even worse, because Nintendo's first party is far stronger than Sony's.

@joeorc: Can you clarify this "those who make the stuff get cheaper" but those who don't somehow... dont? It doesn't make any sense to me. The costs also come down for the consumer, otherwise we take our business with someone else - someone who does lower their prices.

The situation is no different for Nintendo.

exactly, there is no monopoly on chips.  many companies make them and nintnedo will shop around.

making your own though you are stuck with a little thing called R&D expenses and let me tell you that R&D is the sole reason things costs so much in the first place.  The parts, making something, labor and so on istn' why a product is expensive, its covering the R&D that went into making the thing
