The systems sell on games, and if Nintendo has high profile 3rd party games right off the bat, on top of a large library / install base before Sony's release, they're screwed. This is actually how Sony got their strong start against Nintendo in the first place (with PS1), but in this case it's even worse, because Nintendo's first party is far stronger than Sony's.

exactly, there is no monopoly on chips. many companies make them and nintnedo will shop around.
making your own though you are stuck with a little thing called R&D expenses and let me tell you that R&D is the sole reason things costs so much in the first place. The parts, making something, labor and so on istn' why a product is expensive, its covering the R&D that went into making the thing
