If this becomes the case, it's the fault of Japan, not Nintendo. If you notice, the top selling console this gen (Wii) may not even pass the PSP in hardware, the "losing" handheld. The PSP has been getting pretty damn good 3rd party support this gen...
As for the topic, I think Sony should give up on PSP2, unless they have some sort of revolutionary idea. If their system turns out to be just a more powerful 3DS, they'll get "Gamecubed." Sony lives on 3rd party support, and if 3DS takes it away, they're completely screwed.
Like others have said, they should probably just make a gaming phone feature device that can compete with the iPhone and other smart phones.
