You don't seriously expect people to collect every star more than once or twice do you? Orchestral music doesn't work miracles y'know.

It doesn't matter whether or not people would make use of a feature. What matters is if it's there or not.

SMG 2 doesn't have to last 18 years like SMB though so it doesn't need as many features. How can a 2d Mario remain replayable for 18 years without online?
