Nintendo - Nintendo hate? - View Post

Most of the Wii owners know about the commercial successes which are mainly the first party titles. When I see the sales of that Just Dance over Mad World.

Uh, Just Dance is probably going to outsell everything on either HD console not named CoD, GT, Halo or Gears. That isn't saying much.

The fact that Wii owners are buying Just Dance in itself is not a problem. People not buying Mad World isn't an issue, either, since it was destined to perform about as well as it did (see anything from Clover Studios).

Wii owners are very picky about what they want. Games that appeal to their values tend to do far better than standard (last gen) games with tacked on Wii controls. Nintendo understands this, and builds their games with this in mind. People don't just mindlessly buy anything Nintendo comes out with (see how fast AC or Wii Music fizzled out).

Take Monster Hunter 3, for example. A great game, but most of its sales potential in the west was squandered because it's basically a last gen game on the Wii. I have no doubt it would have done better as an HD multiplat with improved graphics in its current form. However, if the game were built ground-up specifically for the Wii, drastically changing the series by implementing things like motion combat, a better interface and all, we really may have seen something else. This would have taken far more effort than the route Capcom took, though, as well as potentially alienating fans in Japan.

Since no third party has really given it their all for core games like this, it's tough to say. One thing is for sure - you cannot just take old series popularized in the Playstation era (mostly cinematic games) and slap it on the Wii, expecting sales comparable to HD consoles. The games that perform best are those with some arcade roots, like most popular games from the 8 and 16-bit eras. Quick and accessible fun.

There's no basis for that assertion. It outsold the previous PS2 version with ease.
