If Nintendo actually tapped all age groups, and women as well as the traditional 5-35 male audience, its certaintly feasible.  The market grows pretty rapidly.  PS1 and N64 both sold much better than any console prior (based on the shipment data I've looked up) in the Americas in 1996-1997 (and beyond for PS1), once the 3D revolution was in full effect.

We're about due for one of those massive, industry re-aligning expansions, since they seem to come once every ten years:

~72' to 75' Birth of arcade gaming

~ 83'-86' - NES Revolution/gameplay expansion revolution

~ 95'-97' - 3D/PS1 cinematic revolution

~ 06'-08' - Interface/Demographic revolution (motion control/Live/Home)
