That was the strategy during the Yamauchi days. The second party studios that I know of include Rare, Silicon Knights, and Left Field, We know what happened to Rare. Left field did not want follow Nintendo's practices and Silicon Knights left. Now Nintendo is only working with proven partners and are not interested in that old second party system. I probably summed this up badly but you can use google to find Iawata's stance on aquiring second party studios.
