If you lost your bait, that means the fish DID nibble on the line, and you missed your cue; if you retract your pole before any fish bites the lure, you keep your bait.  Keep a very close eye on the lure next time, and keep your ears open as well: you'll hear a small *boop* sound when they nibble on the line.

No no. When I said "so decided to go for it anyway. Lost all my baits as expected" I meant it wasn't working at all and the quest time was reaching the end. So, I pulled at random.
