Slimes are to DQ what Chocobos are to FF. The most iconic beast of the games

By the time DQX is out I'll be well versed in these things

So what other staples are there? Like a Cid type character in each game?

There's also quite a bit of item lore that's mantained through the games. Items like Falcon Sword, Metal King Shields/Armours/Helms. The Mini-Medals are also a staple, as they unlock some of the best weaponry. Casino is also a staple, and usually the only place to gain the best Whips in the game, Gringham Whip, which is also a staple.

The theme almost always surrounds some kind of dark world super power that's threatening the land. And there's also the legend of the people of Zenithia, which has had some tie-ins in some DQs as well (The flying Castle of Zenithia appeared both on DQVI and DQVII as well, and in DQVIII, the Dracovians were the equivalent to the Zenithians as well).

Yeah Zenithia was really cool!

Yeah I saw the casino's in DQV/IV Remakes but I really hate minigames in RPG's (except for Yakuza 3 ones) so I just skipped and continued the fabulous story.

But with the DS I hope some of their minigames are pretty innovative and fun.

with weapons all I used to do when I got to a new town was grind A LOT to get eniugh money to get a new weapon, that way I levelled up and could get powerful weapons.

I am glad there are no random battles though, it will encourage me to explore the dungeons and so on more.

I'm on the opposite camp, I loved the random battles. I'll wait to see how they're implemented, but I can almost feel that they won't put grinding spots due to that >_>. I want my metal slime grinding spot damn it!
