The Last Story is a 1st party game. It's a joint project between Nintendo and MistWalker. Explains why the game looks and feels fantastic.

What I meant was, why aren't third party developers trying their best to make their Wii games look good like some of the first party Wii games? It seems that that majority of them don't take full advantage of the Wii hardware. 

It's becaused they are convinced it's the tools that make great games, not the talent.

I suppose you're right. It is to bad most developers are like this now. It seems more third party developers put more time and effort in their games years ago than they do now, even if the hardware they were using was limited. I've seen some pretty amazing things done on older game consoles, and yet they say they are unable to do much with the Wii hardware. Developers are just not as resourceful as they were years ago.

Even with HD systems, many games are more about throwing money at the graphics instead of overall quality game design. One of the reasons Call of Duty is doing so well is that is has both. Just that reviewers/developers/enthusiast gamers only see one of those things.
