Too much premature ejubilation going on around here waiting on "The Downfall of the Wii".
People forget that the sales results we see are a week behind. It now says American Sales, December 15th.
The possibilities that retailers are artificially withholding supply to drum up bigger business makes perfect sense.
I was at Toys 'R' Us yesterday & saw a Nintendo representative talk to the managers. Looked like stuff was brewing. I've never seen a Nintendo rep in a store before. She had a sky blue sweater/blazer on with white Nintendo logo and the word 'representative' underneath and the Wii logo on her upper left.
The figures from the weeks ending December 22nd & December 29th are going to be monstrous for Wii in North America so I think it would do certain folks' health well not to get too excited at this week's dropoff. It's part supply and part retailer strategy.
DS meanwhile is a runaway train! I think these are record figures for any game console in a holiday season. Nintendo is making money hand over fist. This strategy has paid off in not just spades but the whole damn card deck!
The 20 Million year end figure is still on track as only 3 weeks ago Wii was in the 14 million range and now is about to cross over into 17 million. I expect Wii to quickly pass the 18 million range and move right into the 19 million range next week with the massive shipment. Japan's arching up for the final weeks of December 2007.
On the last week and days of December Wii will pull in that 20 million number. Yes, the worst case scenario has come through. It will ONLY sell 20 million this year. Supply woes are just that serious.
VGC & NPD numbers will be quite scary for December. And next year Nintendo will slowly work out the kinks in production resulting in the 60 million for end of 2008.
Just like with everything Nintendo's been doing the past 3 or 4 years, you won't believe it 'til you see it.
