Why is the word "LOL" so overused nowadays?

Yup, my GF uses LOL a lot of time, without any form of context at all since it doesn't fit anywhere near a phrase said in portuguese. 

lol it's so hard to imagine someone would use it IRL.

I wish I could hear someone say it!
