I met a girl from China, this year. Xin is the oldest of 3 children, she has a younger sister and brother. She told me that because of her father's occupation and social status, he was given an "allowance" of 2 children. So when his youngest, his son, was born, he was sent to live with Xin's uncle. When he was old enough to start high school, he came back to live with Xin's family and became her official "brother".
The fact that Chinese people are "hiding" their children is very very real. Apparently this is a common thing, to have your "surplus" children living with family members because you aren't in a position to keep them.I got it from a first-hand source.
