I guess I was a bit negligent in my original post and it's led to some debate. I apologize.
Yes, some of you hit it spot on, it appears that parents did hide their babies. Not only to try again for boys but also in the case of repeat pregnancies to avoid being forced by the govenment to have an abortion.
